Snorkeling and Scuba Diving in Puerto Morelos
Snorkeling and Scubadiving in Puertos Morelos is very popular. The Mesoamerican Reef System is so close to the shore that it forms a natural barrier for the town and keeps the waters really calm and shallow. Stringent environmental regulations have kept this part of the reef unspoiled. Only tour operators that adhere to the guidelines are allowed to offer snorkel trips here. You can find a tour operator to take you out to the reef along the beach or by the main pier in town.
Within the Marine Park there are many great opportunities for scuba diving in Puerto Morelos. The C-56 Juan Escutia, a retired Mexican Navy ship, was donated and sunk in 2000. that now provides an artificial reef. The ship can now be found 30 meters deep in the ocean and is completely covered in corals, sponges and a plethora of colorful sea creatures.
Visit the Botanical Garden
Located 2 kilometers south of the Puerto Morelos turnoff from Cancun on highway 307, the Alfredo Barrera Marín Botanical Garden is one of the largest botanical gardens in the country and is a beautiful location to get up close and personal with the local flora and fauna. The garden also hosts a large animal population, including the only troops of coastal spider monkeys left in the region.

Selvatica is a must do for adventure lovers. It is an ecopark with over 330 acres of jungle offering something for everyone, from 6 to 96 year olds. Río Secreto could very well be one of the great wonders of the world. Come and experience this stunning underground river with thousands of dramatic stalactites and stalagmites. It’s like stepping back in time to witness something mysterious and truly spectacular. Just south of Playa del Carmen on Highway 307.
Two kilometres north of Puerto Morelos you will find Crococun Zoo. The Zoo is a great place to see the local wildlife. Venture into jungle and confront the prehistoric crocodiles, the rulers of this sacred land, and witness their unpredictable personalities. During your visit you will encounter friendly monkeys, a variety of snakes and other exciting surprises.

The Ruta de Los Cenotes (Cenote Route) is a road found just south of Puerto Morelos. Look for the arches above the road to the west of highway 307. There are several cenotes along here, also known as sinkholes. These cenotes are a natural marvel feeding from underground streams and rivers that are all under the Yucatan peninsula. On the Cenotes Route you can find an ecological Park called Selvatica and there are many other cenotes, the most popular being Cenote Las Mojarras, Cenote Siete Bocas, Cenote Boca Del Puma and Cenote Verde Lucero.

Visit the Ruins
There are a number of Mayan ruin sites within an easy drive of Puerto Morelos. The ruins in Tulum are the closest drive at just over 1 hour. Just ask around in town for a tour operator or drive yourself. About 2 hours drive, Coba offers a day trip exploration of Mayan archelogical history. Chichen Itza is the most famous ruin site in the Yucatan, about 3-1/2 hours drive from Puerto Morelos on a toll road. You're sure to have a good time and learn a lot about this area's history in the process.
Spend an evening in the town square
You can spend a wonderful night just strolling around and sitting in the town square. There is almost always something going on and it's fun to see how much fun the local kids have playing soccer here.
